Boundary Support

Since you are following this series, you have already set boundaries (part 1 of 4), learned how to communicate your boundaries in support of your personal and professional self-care (part 2 of 4) and are now ready to learn how to obtain support as needed.

1.      Converse with supporters: Start conversations by reaffirming your commitment, love, and care for your family, friends, and co-workers. Remember that frequent effective communication and open dialogue are key to getting your family members, friends, and co-workers to understand that your boundaries are a priority.

2.      Explain the reasons behind the boundaries: Share why these boundaries are essential to you and how they positively impact your well-being, happiness, and ability to be present with them. Emphasize that the boundaries are not about pushing them away but about nurturing a healthier dynamic. It is about maintaining a healthy and balanced relationship, which benefits everyone involved.

3.      Acknowledge their feelings: Be open to hearing their perspective and acknowledging their feelings. Understand that they might have concerns or worries. Respect their feelings and perspectives while standing firm on the boundaries that are important for your well-being.

4.      Offer alternatives: When gaining support for your boundaries, provide alternative ways to connect and spend time together that still honor your needs. When approached with empathy and understanding, most family members, friends, and co-workers will ultimately support your efforts to maintain a balanced and healthy relationship.

5.      Express gratitude: Acknowledge and appreciate your family members, friends, and co-workers support in respecting your personal and professional boundaries. Expressing gratitude reinforces positive behavior and encourages continued support.

Remember setting, communicating, and obtaining support of your boundaries are vital aspects of self-care and building a healthy relationship with yourself and others. Open communication and understanding are key to involving your family, friends, and co-workers in supporting your personal and professional boundaries. Be patient and compassionate as you navigate this process together and be open to ongoing discussions as your needs and circumstances evolve.
